Doctors traditionally have short prenatal visits with you and only turn up at your birth when you are ready to push the baby out.  They also have the training to perform c-sections. You will birth in a hospital.

Midwives (CNM's) prenatal appointments generally last an hour and they ask about your well being. They stay with you during most of your labor and can do everything a doctors does. But, they can not do c-sections. You will birth in a hospital or birth center.

Home Birth Midwives (CPM or CNM) do prenatal appointments in their home office or at your home. They do not offer epidurals or perform c-sections as that is done at hospitals. They will come to you when you are in labor and you will birth in your own home. Only a few can file through your insurance as most are counted as out of network. Typically a home birth costs from $4100 to $5500 cash due by your 36th week of pregnancy.
